We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.

4-6-07 An all time record amount of money was raised for Fayettes service personnel during the fifth annual Cookout for the Troops hosted by the Fayette County School Systems transportation department.

Over 200 people attended this year's event that netted over $3,000. The proceeds will be used to purchase $50 gift cards to send to Fayettes men and women who are currently serving in the U.S. military.

"The outpouring of generosity and love was apparent in all the many donations from individuals and businesses this year," says organizer Linda Mosley. "It is important to remember the wonderful men and women across the sea that fight to give us the freedom to gather, to speak, to laugh and organize such events as this."

Fayette residents who have a friend or loved one serving in the military can request to have a card sent to their solider by mailing his or her name and address by April 15 to: The Troops, 210 Stonewall Avenue, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Please include a telephone contact number.

Each March, the countys school bus drivers and monitors work countless hours organizing the cookout, going door to door to Fayette businesses soliciting door prizes, raffle prizes and donations. The drivers also provide the food and desserts that are enjoyed by those who attend.

Students in Fayette Middle's after school art class help to promote the fundraiser by participating in a poster design contest. The posters are used as advertisements throughout the school system. Kendra Parrish took first place this year and received a Wal-Mart gift certificate. Second place was awarded to Jayla Johnson who received a gift card to Stevi B's.

Businesses throughout the county generously supported this years cookout by donating over 60 prizes that included handmade quilts, jewelry, gift certificates, furniture and artwork. Those supporting the event were Autera Health Clinic, Attina's Music Store, Bed and Bath, IHOP, Freightliner, Fayette Concrete, PetroFlame, Wal-Mart, J&J Grading, Sunkiss, Riders Photography, Bicycle Unlimited, Fayette Express, Debbie Found, Sudz & More, Kathy McBrayer, Kelli Raines, Mike & C's, Andy's Nursery, Ann Carlson, Susan Vogles, Boneless Everything Extreme, Crafty Onez, Publix, Haverty's, Southern Lawn Design, Huddleston Flowers, Sweets & Tea, La Hair, Clearly Fun Soaps, G.
