Choosing The Right Pet Food
6/26/07 (SPM Wire) Sometimes finding healthful food for your
pet seems as tough as feeding your family, with so many choices available.
Dr. Randy Kidd, a holistic veterinarian and contributor to PetStyle.com, offers these tips on what to look for in pet food: * Nutritional Adequacy -- Food should have optimal nutrient levels to meet your pet's needs and its current status: puppy or kitten, growing animal, during pregnancy, adult, or aged animal. Read the label, as pet food ingredients are listed in descending order of their respective amounts by weight. Be suspicious of misleading labeling and terminology. * Balance of Nutrients -- Look for foods with a high percentage of good quality meat ingredients, compared to the total amounts of cereals. * Wholesome -- Is the food good for health? Look for food sources you would not be afraid to eat yourself. Home cooking can also be a great option, Kidd suggests. For dogs, a basic recipe of approximately 1/3 meat sources, 1/3 cereals, 1/3 veggies and supplements will generally fit the bill. For cats, meat sources need to be increased as a percentage of the whole, perhaps to 50-60 percent of the diet. Remember that cats have special requirements for total proteins, specific amino acids, and vitamins, so check with your board certified vet or veterinary nutritionist.
