Local Photography Group's Field Trip to Fernbank
4/14/08 (2:32 p.m.) A few members of the Fayette Art Center & Gallery's Photography Club recently went on a field trip to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta. I was invited to tag along by Donna Rosser, The Barefoot Photographer, who heads up the club. Donna, photographer extraordinaire, teaches on a regular basis at the Art Center, and holds workshops. I'll be taking the upcoming Lensbaby workshop - wait until you see what that lens does to photographs! (If you just can't wait, visit Donna's blog, she has a photo or two on one of her blogs).
I've always loved Fernbank and could go once a month and see something new every time I went. This time the rare 17-foot dugout canoe found here in Georgia caught my attention. It was fascinating seeing the canoe and thinking back to a time when Indians traveled our streams in these narrow bits of wood! They cooked right on the wood bottom of the canoe, too. (Read about the canoe)
We bypassed the IMAX theater on this trip, we were there on a mission... to take as many photographs as our digital cameras could hold in memory! I'm rather proud of my Sony A100 after moving up from one of those little hand digitals that made you wait forever before capturing the photo. However, when I pulled out my Sony I felt like someone driving a Hyundai in a NASCAR race... woefully outclassed and under-powered!
Some of the members of the group had lens that cost more than my camera and all of my accessories together! However, it was a lot of fun and I learned a LOT. Visit our Photography section to learn more about the photography club and Donna's classes!
Here are some of the many photos I took while wandering around Fernbank. They don't compare to some of the ones taken by the rest of the group by any means but I'm not exactly ashamed of them either!
