We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand
fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as
sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as
effects.

Georgia Shakespeare Shakes Up Shakespeare with As You Like It
6/11/08 (10:28 p.m.) Georgia
Shakespeare is shaking things up with a hip and groovy new twist on one of
Shakespeare’s well-loved romantic comedies, As You Like It,
which opened June 11 and plays through August 1 at the Conant Performing Arts
Center, Oglethorpe University (4484 Peachtree Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30319).
Tickets range from $15 - $40 ($10 preview tickets available on Wednesday, June
11 and Thursday, June 12). For tickets call 404.264.0020 or visit
www.gashakespeare.org.
Set in the 1960’s “Summer of Love,”
director Karen Robinson and a cast of veteran Georgia Shakespeare
designers (Kat Conley, Sydney Roberts, Clay Benning, and Mike Post) have
placed this gender-bending comedy against a backdrop of the swinging sixties
with characters adorned in bellbottoms, headbands and tie-dye. “The Summer of
Love is a perfect backdrop for this story,” says Richard Garner, Producing
Artistic Director for Georgia Shakespeare. “The story is one of free-spirited
youth who flee an oppressive society to search for love in the Forest of Arden.
It’s been a fun and exciting journey as we have found the parallels to the
Summer of Love and the story of As You Like It that are inherent
in Shakespeare’s script written over 400 years ago.”
The cast of As You Like It
is headed up by two of Georgia Shakespeare’s Associate Artists, Park
Krausen (Rosalind) and Daniel May (Orlando). Other cast members
include Georgia Shakespeare Associate Artists Chris Ensweiler (Oliver), Hudson
Adams (Charles/Duke Senior), Chris Kayser (Touchstone), Brad Sherrill (Duke
Frederick), Rob Cleveland (Corin), Joe Knezevich (Jaques), and Allen O’Reilly
(Adam/Hymen). Rounding out the cast are other favorite Atlanta actors J.C. Long
(Amiens), Enoch King (Silvius), and David Quay (Le Beau), as well as newcomers
Derrick Ledbetter (Jaques de Boys), Brynn Tucker (Phoebe), Sam Bardwell
(William), Ally Cary (Audrey) and Susannah Millonzi (Celia).
In addition to As You Like It,
Georgia Shakespeare will produce two other Shakespeare classics – the infamous
courtroom drama The Merchant of Venice (June 26 – August
2), and the rarely produced All’s Well That Ends Well (July 10 –
August 3). Also slated for the 2008 season is the Family Classics Series world
premiere of the English folktaleTom Thumb the Great (July 18 –
August 2), and an original musical adaptation Antigone (October 9
- November 2).
