Thomas Jefferson Comes to the Newnan Centre for Performing & Visual Arts
9/12/07 Return in time to the Spring of 1821, and spend an
unforgettable and thought-provoking evening in the company of our nation's
third president. Actor/playwright J.D. Sutton brings Thomas Jefferson to life,
inviting his audience to experience "an intimate encounter with the man who
defined American Independence"
J.D. Sutton's acclaimed one-man play, Twilight at
Monticello--An Evening with Thomas Jefferson, will be presented at The
Centre for Performing & Visual Arts for 1 performance only at 7:00 p.m. on
Monday, September 17th.
Hear first-hand recollections of the people, events, and ideas
which have shaped our country and its ideals, and be stirred by Jefferson's
vision of what America's independence means to people throughout the world who
long for and cherish freedom.
Set in the "twilight" of his life, Jefferson speaks of his
greatest achievements--his writing of the Declaration of Independence and the
Statute for Religious Freedom, and his founding of the University of
Virginia--and of his disappointments, including his repeated failures to bring
and end to slavery. While doing so he touches on subjects which continue to
resonate through our daily lives.
Thomas Jefferson was a "revolutionary" in the truest sense of
the word, and the play is both provocative and timely--"ripped from the
headlines!": the separation of church and state (Jefferson coined the
phrase!), the role of government in public education, the limits of government
power over individual rights, the right of the people to peacefully change
their government; and our government's legitimate role in spreading democracy
throughout the world. As an audience member recently put it, "If there was
ever a time when this country needed to hear what Thomas Jefferson had to say,
that time is now."
As a part of this encounter--and in what many people consider a
highlight of the performance--"Mr.. Jefferson" engages his guests in an
impromptu Question-and Answer session, during which they may ask him any
questions they wish. Some he may not choose to answer, and his answers are
often surprising.
Mr.. Sutton's performance has received enthusiastic responses
from both audiences ("An excellent performance and history lesson--well done,"
Mr.. Sutton...made Mr.. Jefferson come to life. Amazingly good,!" "A truly
memorable performance,!" "I felt like I had spent an hour with the real Thomas
Jefferson." and critics (Sutton's look-alike make-up and gentlemanly bearing
match every detail of the Jefferson in the mind's eye...a fine rendition of
the character," "...a fascinating look at a man who should be revered by every
American," "...a colorful, gripping and ultimately fascinating portrait of our
third president," ..."You won't see a better rendition of the man from
Monticello than this!"
Experience an unforgettable encounter with one of history's
most unforgettable men.
