(ARA) - Retirement planning is an emotional subject. Many
people fear they are not saving enough. Others are confused about their
investment options or unsure if their savings are invested aggressively
enough. Still others may be saving and investing wisely, but are concerned
they simply started too late.

When it comes to making decisions, our minds tend to perceive and react to
the information available to us, each in its own particular way. This is
not something we think much about. It is a part of each of us. Trying to
change this process is almost impossible.

Boomerang
An American slang term that refers to an adult who has
moved back in with his or her parents (who are part of the baby boomer
generation) instead of living independently. The phrase, when applied to
an individual, makes reference to the fact that the person lived
independently for a period, but subsequently returned home due to the
financial costs associated with maintaining a separate household.
Investopedia Says:
While boomer parents may be pleased emotionally to have their boomerangs
back in the household, boomerangs can often pose a significant financial
burden on their parents. This can result in a reduction in retirement
savings for the boomerang's parents, leaving them with the decision to
either postpone their own retirement or have their children help out with
the household expenses.
Other countries have adopted similar slang to represent this domestic
phenomenon. In Italy, the term "mammon", or "mama's boys" is used, while
the Japanese refer to them as "parasaito shinguru", or "parasite singles".
In the U.K., children boomeranging back home has given rise to the acronym
KIPPERS (or kids in parents' pockets eroding retirement savings).
Dividend Signaling
A theory that suggests company announcements of an increase
in dividend payouts act as an indicator of the firm possessing strong
future prospects. The rationale behind dividend signaling models stems
from game theory. A manager who has good investment opportunities is more
likely to "signal" than one who doesn't because it is in his or her best
interest to do so.
Investopedia Says:
Over the years the concept that dividend signaling can predict positive
future performance has been a hotly contested subject. Many studies have
been done to see if the markets reaction to a "signal" is significant
enough to support this theory. For the most part, the tests have shown
that dividend signaling does occur when companies either increase or
decrease the amount of dividends they will be paying out.
The theory of dividend signaling is also a key concept used by proponents
of inefficient markets.

Phantom Gain
A situation that arises when a gain on an investment is
offset by a loss in the same investment, which usually comes from an
income tax provision. Phantom gains are named as such because there is no
true return, although it may seem otherwise.
Investopedia Says:
This is a difficult situation to identify because the losses may not be so
apparent on the surface. For example, let's look at a bondholder who also
receives coupon payments from the same bond.
If the bondholder receives a coupon payments totaling $150 during a
one-year period and then sells the bond during the year for a loss of
$130, the bondholder may believe that he or she has gained $20 during the
year. However, the taxes the investor will pay on the coupon payment will
reduce the net payment. Assume that the investor pays $30 in taxes on the
coupon payment. This investor has a phantom gain of $20, but in reality he
or she has lost $10.

Sideways Trend
Describes the horizontal price movement that occurs when
the forces of supply and demand are nearly equal. A sideways trend is
often regarded as a period of consolidation before the price continues in
the direction of the previous move.
A sideways price trend is also commonly known as a "horizontal trend".
Investopedia Says:
Sideways trend is generally a result of the price traveling between strong
levels of support and resistance. It is not uncommon to see a horizontal
trend dominate the price action of a specific asset for a prolonged period
before starting a move higher or lower. Brief consolidation is often
needed during large price runs, as it is nearly impossible for such large
price moves to sustain themselves over the longer term.
