1-4-07 As the Democrats brought their House rules package
to the floor today, U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland supported an effort to
preserve a Republican-era standard that protects against tax increases.
Democrats unanimously voted down the motion, which fell 232-199.
"It didn't take long for House Democrats to reveal their true intentions," Westmoreland said. "They've been in power for a matter of hours and they immediately signal their plans to raise income taxes on American families. I hope Georgia voters will take a look at who voted against this effort to prevent tax increases. "The Democrats '100 Hours of Big Spending Agenda' will explode the deficit, and they plan on sending taxpayers the bill." The Republican motion would have extended a ban on retroactive tax increases and would have required a three-fifths supermajority vote of the House to raise income taxes. The requirements remain but can now be waived by the Rules Committee. "The ability to waive the rule renders it meaningless," Westmoreland said. "If that requirement had any teeth to it, the Democrats would have removed it completely. Under Republicans, there was no bypassing these important protections." Westmoreland will vote against most of the Democratic rules package because it didn't go through the committee process. "When the process is broken, the product is flawed," Westmoreland said. "Democrats promised a new era of openness and accountability and that's not what we're seeing on the first day of the 110th Congress."
