3/9/08 (5:49 p.m.) Young scientific minds put on a show for judges at the
regional competition of the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Griffin.
In addition to advancing 16 projects to the state competition
next month and three to the international championship in May, judges also
awarded 22 special recognitions.
Amy Wheble, Starr’s Mill High; Zenia Zheng, McIntosh High and
Sonika Reddy and Sonya Jooma, Fayette County High, were chosen to automatically
advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair that will be held in
Atlanta May 11-16.
The following students placed first in the regional
competition and will advance to the State Science and Engineering Fair at the
University of Georgia April 3-5: Kensey Seidel, Bennett’s Mill Middle; Jackie
Roshelli and Madeline Davis, Bennett’s Mill Middle; Rebecca Otwell, Fayette
Middle; Arlene Wilckens, Rising Starr Middle; Jessica Richey and Allie Buchanan,
Rising Starrr Middle; Shannon McKillip, Rising Starr Middle; Amy Hebel,
Christopher Feigenbaum and Natalie Lemus, Fayette County High; Sonika Reddy and
Sonya Jooma, Fayette County High; Michael Martin, Krishan Bhagat and Julian
Urrego, Fayette County High; Christian Concepcion, Joni Barnard and Asad
Abdulla, Fayette County High; Zenia Zheng, McIntosh High; Brahma Natarajan,
McIntosh High; Sadie Mason, McIntosh High; Camara Carter and Poonim Daya, Sandy
Creek High; Amy Wheble, Starr’s Mill High and Lauren Beatty, Starr’s Mill High.
Special awards were received by the following students: Amy
Wheble, Starr’s Mill, from the ASM Materials Education Foundation, U.S. Air
Force and U.S. Army (bronze award); Amy Hebel, Christopher Feigenbaum and
Natalie Lemus, Fayette County High, from the American Meteorological Society and
Scientific American Award for Outstanding Achievement in Education; Sadie Mason,
McIntosh High, Association for Women Geoscientists Award, UGA for highest first
place score in environmental science and U.S. Army; Zenia Zheng, McIntosh High,
the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association, National Society of
Professional Engineers, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army; Sonika Reddy and Sonya
Jooma, Fayette County High, Mu Alpha Theta and the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services; Christian Concepcion, Joni Barnard and Asad Abdulla, Fayette
County High, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Jessica Richey
and Allie Buchanan, Rising Starr Middle, Ricoh; Scarlet Roland, Starr’s Mill
High, U.S. Air Force; Arlene Wilckens, Rising Starr, U.S. Navy/U.S. Marines and
