Atlanta Christian College Moving to... Peachtree City?
"ACC On the Move" Atlanta Christian College's board of trustees has announced its unanimous decision to find a new location for the campus, citing future growth and a need for new facilities." Acting upon this announcement a friend of ACC approached some members of the Peachtree City Council and asked if they would like to have the college here. Upon an immediate yes they were asked if they wished to help work to get the college here. The yes answer began the work of gathering resources and commitments and preparing a proposal to persuade the college that Peachtree City was the new home for which they are looking. For those unaware of ACC, here is some background information from their own website: "Atlanta Christian College was founded in 1937 by Judge T. O. Hathcock (1879-1966), who served on the bench in Fulton County, Georgia, from 1914 until 1942." "Throughout its history, Atlanta Christian College has operated on the same campus in East Point, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. The campus is part of a 300-acre farm inherited by Mrs. Hathcock. With a barn, livestock and cultivated fields, the campus in its earliest days had a distinctly rural flavor." Currently ACC has an enrollment of about 400 students. In this expansion it plans to grow to at least 1,200 as well as expand its course offerings up to, and including, Masters Programs. With these ends in mind developers, land owners, interim facility holders, the Fayette County Board of Education and other entities have been approached to bring a package together that will enable and encourage ACC to make Peachtree City their final choice. Several locations have been found for the ACC relocation. The prime location is in Wilksmoor Village where the McDuff extension is being built. This site is ideal in being easy to find, has high visibility and being undeveloped ACC, Peachtree City and the developers can work together to provide a 'complete package,' not just add a college. Along with this there have been conversations with Clayton State University, who is also seeking a permanent presence in Peachtree City. CSU and ACC working together can grow more quickly than either could alone by tailoring their offerings to compliment each other, thus allowing more class and degree availability. Fayette County has over a 90% graduation rate with over 80% pursuing higher education. There are also many adults pursuing continuing education. That makes Fayette County a valuable source of students that has remained untapped locally, thus a golden opportunity for higher academia. With the aid of the Fayette County Development Authority, a final presentation package was created and has been delivered to the President of the ACC. The final due date for submission is April 30, 2008. An announcement of the finalists in the selection process will be made soon after by ACC. There is high expectation Peachtree City will be a finalist. This is a great gain for Peachtree City and a great location for ACC.- Peachtree City Councilman Don Haddix Home | Faith | Back to top
