Community Day at Fernbank Museum

“The Atlanta community is a very important part of the Museum’s success,” said Susan Neugent, President and CEO of Fernbank Museum of Natural History. “Providing complimentary admission is a fitting way to say thank-you while providing an opportunity for everyone to visit the Museum, especially those who may have never experienced the exhibitions and programs we offer visitors of all ages.” 

Community Day visitors can stand beneath the world’s largest dinosaurs in Giants of the Mesozoic or stroll through the prehistoric and modern regions of the state in A Walk Through Time in Georgia. Guests can make a cultural connection in Reflections of Culture, which highlights the ways jewelry, clothing, and other objects communicate information about people and their culture. 

Visitors can also explore the five senses through hands-on activities featuring optical illusions, sound demonstrations and a weather forecasting station in Sensing Nature, or learn more about the plants, animals and natural settings of Georgia’s many regions in the Children’s Discovery Rooms. Museum guests can also pick up a Fossil Floor Explore guide to help them search for the fossilized remains of ancient sea life that make up Fernbank’s unique floors.   

Since opening in 1992 Fernbank Museum of Natural History has encouraged discovery and exploration of the earth’s history, the environment and human culture through exhibitions, dynamic programs, and films in the IMAX® Theatre.  As one of the South’s preeminent museums, Fernbank’s reputation for innovative programming continues to rise, recently launching public programs in archaeology—in which participants are helping search for a lost Spanish mission settlement—and environmental studies—in which families and classrooms engage in urban environmental monitoring and eradication of invasive plants.   

Fernbank is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is regarded as “Atlanta’s Home to Dinosaurs,” a reputation highlighted by the world’s largest dinosaurs in Giants of the Mesozoic. Fernbank is also home to the St. Catherines Island Foundation and Edward John Noble Foundation Collection, a collection of one million artifacts from the first Spanish mission site in Georgia.
