We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.

4/8/08 (4:01 p.m.) Attention all Girl Scouts! Explore science like never before with a day full of fun and education, specially designed for Girl Scouts at Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s Girl Scout Day.

On Saturday, April 12, you’ll enjoy programs that include various hands-on activities, live animal encounters, career chats and badge activities. Discover the workings of weather and take home a craft at Weekend Wonders from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Earn a Fernbank badge ($1 in the Museum Store) with downloadable activities about Earth Connections, Plants and Animals, Wildlife, and Jewelry on Girl Scout Day.

Chat with Fernbank educators and community volunteers to learn about careers in science from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Scientists taking part in Girl Scout Day include:

  • Atlanta Stereographic Association—Learn how 3-D pictures are made and viewed, and take home your own 3-D glasses and photos (while supplies last)

  • Center for the Visually Impaired—Play games, learn about assistive technology, and witness how an electronic Braille machine works

  • Clayton State Biology Department—Explore pond water under microscopes

  • Emory Physics Department—Create Oobleck goo, and learn about the various states of matter

  • Emory Psychology Department—Explore the science of the brain

  • Georgia State University Astronomy Department—Explore the planets, look through a telescope, and make your own constellation and star clock

  • Georgia State University Geosciences Department—Investigate rock samples

Girls Scouts will also be able to investigate the Museum’s permanent and special exhibitions with self-guided tours. Learn about the world’s largest dinosaurs in Giants of the Mesozoic, see how people around the world adorn themselves with expressive objects in Reflections of Culture, journey through Georgia’s regions and natural history in A Walk Through Time in Georgia, investigate science in Sensing Nature, and encounter the mysteries of darkness in environments under the sea, inside caves, under the ground and at night in Fernbank’s current special exhibition, In the Dark.

Don’t forget to download the badge activities before your visit at fernbankmuseum.org! The Fernbank Museum patch is available in the Museum Store for $1.

Girl Scout Day is at Fernbank Museum of Natural History on Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Girl Scout Day is included with museum admission and free for members. Tickets are $15 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, and $13 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children 2 and under. Scouts in uniform will receive $6 off museum admission!

Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road in Atlanta. More information is available to visitors at fernbankmuseum.org. Tickets can be purchased in advance at 404.929.6400.
