7/25/07 Several members of the Marquis de
Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and family friends
gathered at the Powledge home on recently as three generations joined the
patriotic society. Chaplain Colonel John Powledge and his son 1st Lieutenant
Russell Powledge, both active-duty military, were present. George Powledge,
father of John Powledge, was unable to attend but was inducted.
The Powledge men have had family in Georgia
since the 1730s when their German ancestors migrated to America. While the
Powledge men are serving America today, they have a strong appreciation of
their American Revolution Patriot, Samuel Sewell, Jr, who had his horse shot
out from under him during battle.
When asked how he felt about joining the SAR, Col. Powledge replied, "We
have a blessing in the United States with the tradition of our history and
our freedoms. Freedom requires sacrifice — regardless of the cost."
He continued, "The Sons of the American
Revolution honor those who carried out and did the hard work to bring us the
freedoms we enjoy. I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for these
freedoms."

Prayer at Valley Forge

Powledge concluded reading by President George
Washington's "Prayer at Valley Forge' from a framed picture (right):
"I consider it an indispensable duty to close
this last solemn act of my official life by commending the interests of our
dearest country to the protection of Almighty God and those who have the
superintendence of them into His Holy keeping. - George Washington"
1st Lt. Russell Powledge, a 2005 graduate of West Point and recent newlywed,
commented he was privileged to be able to join the SAR with his dad and his
grandfather. He is currently waiting on his orders for his next military
assignment.
Also witnessing the patriots join the SAR were Daughters of the American
Revolution Brenda Jessel of the General Daniel Newnan Chapter, Elizabeth
