World’s Largest Truck Convoy
Record-Breaking Year
|
The international fund raising and awareness event, the WLTC, is a unique partnership between law enforcement and truckers to raise funds for Special Olympics so they can continue to train in year-round sports activities. Officers involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics have made the WTLC one of their many annual signature events.
“Special Olympics has a way of bringing everyone together, setting aside differences and building atmospheres of acceptance,” said Deputy Chief Billy Grogan of the Marietta Police Department. “The fact that Special Olympics can bring together law enforcement and truckers is a testament to how the athletes of Special Olympics are a true inspiration.”
2007 proved to be another record breaking year in Georgia. The 3rd Annual WLTC raised more than $30,000 with 141 trucks for the 22,797 athletes in the state of Georgia. 2006 raised $13,800 with 63 trucks. Activities started on Friday with an evening hosted by the Kennesaw Police Department which included a cook out and showing of “Smokey and the Bandit”. Truckers were invited to come out, relax and spend the night. Saturday, co-hosted by Marietta Police Department and other law enforcement agencies hosted another celebration. The day consisted of registration, live music by John Martin and the Southern Drive Band, Southside Steve from Eagle106.7, a Smokey & The Bandit Trans AM, WLTC founder Cpl. Norm Schneiderhan, and Mrs. United Nations US, along with numerous Cobb County Special Olympic Athletes.
Marietta Wrecker, a Silver Sponsor, won the bidding war for lead truck. Taylor Transportation, another Silver Sponsor, won the bid for the tail truck. All money raised from registration fees, live auctions, and merchandise sales all go directly to the athletes of Special Olympics Georgia to help to continue to give them the opportunities for year-round sports training and competition.
This event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors. CiCi’s Pizza, Gold Sponsor, had a total of 16 trucks in the convoy! We also thank our Silver Sponsors who participated in the convoy: Courier Express, H&H Transportation, Inc., Kennesaw Transportation, Inc., LiWay Transfer & Storage, Inc., Marietta Wrecker, Marten, On the Spot Trucking, Smyrna Truck, Taylor Transportation, Inc., and UPS.
The WLTC was conceived in 2001 by Corp. Norm
Schneiderhan special project coordinator for the Orange
County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Schneiderhan, who drove a truck for about
three years in his father’s trucking company before he entered the field of law
enforcement, launched the event for Special Olympics as a way to call attention
to the organization among truckers.
Mark your calendars for next year, September 20, 2008! You won’t want to miss
out on seeing this amazing sight and another record-breaking year!
