Duke TIP Honors Outstanding Students10/23/07 Imagine being in the seventh grade and scoring better on the SAT or ACT than most of the nation’s college-bound seniors. That is exactly what 42 Fayette students did last year as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). Of those students, five earned scores better than 85 percent of college bound seniors who took the same tests. J.C. Booth students Karen Anderson, Braeden Brettin and Ellen Smith, along with Sean Landry of Rising Starr Middle and Rebecca McCord of Fayette Middle, were among the 1,411 (2 percent) highest scoring TIP students nationwide who were honored at the program’s Grand Recognition Ceremony on the campus of Duke University in May. Additionally, they and the other 37 TIP students from Fayette Middle, Whitewater Middle, J.C. Booth Middle, Flat Rock Middle and Rising Starr Middle were honored at the State Recognition Ceremony for having earned scores on the SAT or ACT above the average score of college-bound seniors. Duke TIP’s Talent Search identifies seventh graders in 16 states in the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest who have scored in the 95th percentile or above on a grade-level achievement tests or other measure of aptitude. In addition to the above-level testing experience, talent search participants receive educational materials and resources through tenth grade to help them develop to their full potential. Based on their SAT or ACT scores, students may also qualify to participate in Duke TIP’s Summer Studies or e-Studies programs. Home | Education | Kudos | Back to top
