We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand
fibers connect us with our fellow-men; and along those fibers, as
sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as
effects.

Six essential qualities that
are the key to success: Sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy,
wisdom, charity. - William Menninger
9/16/07 Patriots. What a word this is. What emotions rise
to the top of our hearts when we hear this single word.
September is the month where we celebrate with joy and remember with pain
and tears. We remember the tragedy of the day six years ago when our
country was attacked on our own shores. We remember the struggles of our
military and pray for their safety.
We should also remember America's early patriots. Our founding fathers
were immigrants. They came for numerous reasons to settle this land. Some
escaped the tyranny of the King. Some sought refuge in the wilderness.
Others came for the adventure. The list goes on. As you look at your
family's history, you get a sense of why your family may have come to this
land.
Life in the 1700s was not easy for our early patriots. Their
battles included just simple survival from the elements, from wildlife,
and from the long arms of the King. Our early farmers and fishermen wanted
their freedom to live and worship as they pleased. Colonists formed
militias to protect the little they had. It may seem little to us in our
times, but to them, it was life itself.
These early patriots fought when called upon. They fought because they
believed. They fought to survive.
After America won its freedom from England in the American Revolution, the
country still did not function as one. The men who met in secret in
Philadelphia had a vision. It was a vision of what this country should
be. It was a vision of how the government should work for the people, of
the people, and by the people. These framers of the US Constitution spent
four months during the summer of 1787 drafting this vital document.
Imagine the debates! Imagine the heat! Imagine the sense of accomplishment
as these patriots signed their names!
I wonder what they would think now. Times have changed far more than they
could have imagined. But one thing doesn't change- America's Patriots.
Still today, they fight when called upon. They fight because they believe.
They fight for America's survival.
Take time during September to read the US Constitution. Take time to study
the US Constitution. Take time to thank America's Patriots. Take time to
remember.
