The
Organization
Children of Promise is a new mentoring program sponsored by TENNIS IN THE ‘HOOD,
INC (TITH), Fayetteville GA. Founded in 1997, TITH is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit
community organization that provides educational services and leadership
development to at-risk children in South Fulton, Henry, Clayton, and Fayette
Counties.
In addition to the Children of
Promise Mentoring Program, we also offer the following opportunities: Junior
Tennis Development, Tutoring, and an After School Program.
The Program
The purpose of the Children of Promise Mentoring Program is to link children,
ages 4 to 18 years old (Mentees), with positive caring adults who will develop
quality, lasting, one-on-one relationships with them; thus, helping these
children build successful and “promising” futures. To qualify as a Mentee, you
must:
· Have at least one parent who is
incarcerated
· reside in South Fulton, Clayton, Henry or Fayette Counties
· Desire to participate
· Obtain parental / guardian permission and ongoing support for participation
in the program
· Agree to a one-year commitment to the program
· Attend Mentee Trainings as required
· Communicate regularly with the Youth Program Manager. |
The Mentors
Mentors provide young people with a positive
role model. Statistics show children of incarcerated parents are at
greater risk of substance abuse and involvement in the criminal justice
system. However, having a supportive adult will give young people an
opportunity to set and reach positive goals.
Mentors help Mentees “break the cycle” by establishing one-on-one
positive relationships. Mentors have a unique opportunity to
participate in a variety of exciting and rewarding activities, such as
cultural events, sporting events, art projects and games, as well as
tutoring. To qualify as a Mentor, you must:
· Be 18 years of age or older
· Reside in the Atlanta metropolitan area
· Adhere to all TITH Mentoring Program policies and procedures
· Agree to a one-year commitment to the program
· Commit to spending a minimum of one hour a week with your Mentee
· Complete the screening procedure
· Agree to attend Mentor Trainings as required
· Be willing to communicate regularly with the program
The Benefits of Mentoring
Mentoring can improve a
child’s self-esteem, academic skills and performance. Mentoring gives
youth guidance, support and friendship -- all which are positive
alternatives to crime and substance abuse.
Mentors receive the opportunity to make
a difference in the life of a child that will last a lifetime. Mentors
also have the opportunity to share themselves and talents with a child.
*This program is partially funded by Family and Youth
Service Bureau of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The
remaining funding source is through fundraisers and donations from
caring people in our community. If you are unable to contribute as a
Mentor, we will gladly accept and appreciate your donation. |
