5-18-07 Little did they know back in the 1990s when the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program was started in the local school district how successful it would be. Thousands of local 5th graders have taken the 10-week program where they are taught the skills to help them lead productive, drug free lives. Peachtree City Elementary 5th graders recently graduated from the program. They dare you to stay drug free. Peachtree City Chief of Police James Murray told parents at the ceremony held at the school, "I am very proud of the children." He added, "Children, turn to your parents when you have a problem. It's OK to say NO." Each student was asked to write an essay on what the classes taught them. Winners of each class read their essays at the graduation and received a medal in addition to the shirts and certificates given to each student.

D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. |
