12/19/07 Spring Hill Elementary celebrated the completion
of the 5th grade Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program with a
ceremony. All students were recognized and awarded a certificate to
celebrate their participation in the program. In addition, five 5th
graders received special recognition for their outstanding essays. These
essays described the impact the police-led DARE program had on their lives
when faced with making positive choices to resist peer pressure, violence,
drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

5-7-07 Approximately 60 fifth graders
from Kedron Elementary in Peachtree City concluded nearly a semester of class
work on the dangers of drug usage. Taught by specially trained police officers
the D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program explains the harmful
effects of multiple types of drugs and teaches students how to deal with
negative peer pressure. At the conclusion of the course each student writes an
essay on what they learned from the class. Essay winners are then selected from
each class. Students read the essays during graduation ceremonies which are
attended by parents and faculty members. The program is taught to fifth graders
in all Peachtree City elementary schools and has been sponsored by the Kiwanis
Club of Peachtree City for over ten years.

11/21/07 (9:29 a.m.) Peachtree City received and accepted the retirement
request of Police Chief James Murray on November 20. The Chief’s
retirement will go into effect on January 1, 2008.
Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon said, “After eighteen
years, Chief Murray has expressed a desire to move on to the next chapter
of his life, and we respect those wishes.”
Logsdon continued, “Chief Murray has served our City
well during his time here. The Council and I appreciate all the great
work he has accomplished, and the resulting credit he has brought upon the
department and Peachtree City as a whole.”
Logsdon noted that the Chief is leaving an experienced
command staff and a well-trained force that will function effectively
until a replacement is named. Major Mike Dupree will lead the department
in Chief Murray’s absence during the City’s nationwide search to fill the
position of Police Chief.

10/15/07 Hood Avenue Primary School students had a special
visit from the Fire Department in October in honor of Fire Safety Week. Lt.
Bill Rieck of the Fayetteville Fire Department talked with students about
safety and gave them tips on how to keep themselves and their families safe.
