Fayetteville Police Encourage You to Park Smart8/31/07 The increase in entering automobile crime is part of a national trend that Fayetteville is not immune. During the month of August the Fayetteville Police Department has responded to 16 entering auto calls, with a majority of them being in residential areas and the vehicles left unsecured by the owner. Many of the incidents resulted in no items being taken from the cars but evidence revealed that some unknown person did enter the vehicle without the owner’s permission. The reason entering auto crime is so prolific is because people make it too easy for a thief to gain access to their vehicles and make it so tempting to attempt entry by leaving valuables in plain view. Thieves can quickly enter vehicles, often sight unseen. Lt. Jeff Harris of the Fayetteville Police Department Criminal Investigative Unit advises “It’s not just electronics and purses they are stealing, it is mail, receipts, even address books. We are finding that thieves are using personal information found in vehicles to commit identity theft.” There are just a few things you need to do to help protect yourself from becoming a victim of auto theft and auto burglary.
The Fayetteville Police Department wants to remind all motorists to get in the habit of securing their vehicles in parking lots, driveways and anywhere else they park. An unsecured vehicle with valuable items inside is a very easy target for a thief who can be in the car and out of sight before the owner even knows what happened.
