Scholastic Sports Olympiad Just Announced!
All students are eligible: Varsity, JV, Freshman, Club, Intramural, PE and any student that just attends your school and does not currently participate in an organized school activity. Every student is eligible. Individuals and teams will receive Olympic-Style Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for winning their respective sports, divisions or events. Thousands of medals are up for grabs! The Fundamental Principle for this Olympiad is to provide a fun, competitive atmosphere where the Olympic Ideals of the founder of the modern day Olympics, Pierre De Coubertin's, " A Celebration of Life through Sports" is a positive attribute that should be encouraged across all youths, all skill levels, all ethnicities and all geographic areas of the state. "This is an exciting additional to our summer Sports Festival that we hope will increase and expose students to many new sports while also competing in their strong skills" as stated by Eric Pfeifer, Georgia Games Executive Director. This competition will consist of teams and individuals representing their schools in each of the 42+ Georgia Games sporting events where the majority of the sports are being conducted during the summer. Schools will earn points from its students via 1) final standings, 2) participation points, 3) sportsmanship points & 4) distance traveled. First, second and third place school awards will be presented by school size: 1A through 5A and a middle school division. As one of the goals is to bring awareness and to help promote physical fitness across Georgia, up to $18,000.00 in physical fitness grants will be awarded to the top three schools in each of the six divisions. These grants will be awarded to the schools to use as they best see fit to improve their schools sports and physical fitness programs. 42+ Sports Events are scheduled including: Archery, Badminton, Billiards, Baseball, Basketball, BMX Cycling, Bowling, Boxing, Cycling, Diving, Equestrian, Golf, In-Line Skating, Judo, Lacrosse, Mountain Biking, Racquetball, Cross Country Road Race: 5K & 10K, Roller Hockey, Rowing, Rugby, Shooting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Track & Field, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling The Georgia High School Assoc, the Georgia Athletic Directors Assoc., the Georgia Independent School Assoc., the Georgia Coaches Assoc., and the Georgia State Board of Education all support this scholastic Olympiad concept.
