GDOT Wants You to Get Involved in the State Transportation Improvement Program
7/25/07 This summer the Georgia DOT will hold public meetings in areas all across the state to discuss the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) in rural areas and if you live in Georgia, you will want to get involved and participate in one of these public meetings. Public meetings are integral to gaining an understanding of the publics needs and desires for transportation improvements. It also affords us an opportunity to gauge the impact of our transportation program. The STIP is a listing of federally-funded transportation projects within the state that are expected to be funded during fiscal years 2008-2010. Projects include highway, bridge, public transit, bike, pedestrian, railroad projects and other improvements. The STIP public meetings are scheduled for July and August 2007 and GDOT urges the public to attend one of the 3 meetings being held in various locations across the District. In September, the Draft STIP will be presented to the State Transportation Board for adoption and then the STIP will be sent to the Federal Highway Administration for approval. The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgias economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment. For more information regarding meeting times and locations please see the schedule provided below or visit: www.dot.state.ga.us/dot/plan-prog/planning/programs/. Contact for District 3 is Tom Queen (706) 646-6982 or Tom.Queen@dot.state.ga.us District Three (West Georgia) Meeting Date, Location and Time July 31, 2007 - Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, 200 Northside Drive, Carrollton, Ga, 5 p.m. 7 p.m. August 2, 2007 - GDOT District 3 Office, 115 Transportation Blvd., Thomaston, Ga, 5 p.m. 7 p.m. August 6, 2007- Milledgeville Mall, 2400 North Columbia St., Milledgeville, Ga., 4 p.m. 7 p.m. FFP Note: Our past experience with these meetings is that very few people actually show up to give input (at least in our area). When decisions are made, GDOT and other government agencies will point to the input they received from these public meetings to backup or justify some of their decisions. About the only time we've seen a decent turnout is when something huge and controversial is in the wings. If traveling the roads in a timely manner is important to you, if traffic congestion is important to you, if where your money is going to be spent is important to you, then finding time to attend a meetings isn't a bad idea. Try one, if you find it pointless, at least you'll have some contact information and enough knowledge to know who or where to direct your comments, emails and letters! Home | | | Back to top
